There is a label on the back side of the frame with the following inscription: "This Mosaic of S. Carlo Borromeo was presented by Cardinal Antonelli to my grandfather W. A. Mackinnon while at ROme on a visit to his daughter Emma Duchesse de Gramont and then Ambassadress of France at Rome - about the year 1855, 18... Ada Em(ma) Mackinnon".
