The terracotta depicting Hercules and the nemean Lyon can be dated at the first years of the 17th century, and is a preparatory model for a monumental sculpture in ceppo stone of the "Teatro d'Ercole" in the garden of the Villa Arconati at Castellazzo di Bollate (near Milan). This was a suburban villa purchased in 1610, and completely rebuilt, by Galeazzo I Arconati (c. 1580 - 1648) and still owned by his heirs a few decades ago.
